Picture Lady

Picture Lady is a wonderful program that began in the Westlake School District over 20 years ago. The object or mission of the Holly Lane PTA Picture Lady Program is to expose the students in grades 1-4 to the world of art, helping them to gain a better appreciation for not only the different styles of art, but also to learn about the artists, and hopefully be able to recognize specific works of art. During most of the Picture Lady sessions, the students get to participate in a "hands on" activity related to the particular artist or art style presented.

The Picture Lady (or Ladies) selects the artist or style of art they wish to present to the students early in the school year.  The presenter researches the artist and puts together a simple verbal presentation for the students along with art samples to view.  These presentations usually include 15 minutes of teaching about the artist/style and 15 minutes for a related craft or activity as chosen by the presenter.  These presentations usually take place 4 different times during the school year as selected by the principal and approved by the teachers.

Some of the artist or art styles that were introduced during the past few years were:  Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gogh, Pop Art, George Seurat, Origami, Claude Monet, Dr. Seuss, Jim Henson, Charles Schultz, optical illusions, Henri Mattise, Claude Monet, Walt Disney and "How to view a painting." If you'd like to see a comprehensive list of sessions that have been done, contact the current Picture Lady Chair.

The students very much enjoy and look forward to Picture Lady each session. Being involved in Picture Lady is a lot of fun. It's "hands on" and inspirational  to witness the student's  enthusiasm and creativity exhibited by their own little pieces of art that they create as a result of this program.

Currently, (2008) Holly Lane is the only school keeping the tradition of Picture Lady alive and we are in need of volunteers for the 2009 and future years.
