The purpose of the Department
of Pupil Services for the Westlake City School system is to support, facilitate
and augment the general programs that the school district offers through
specialized support. We recognize that
all learning begins with the general curriculum and that all children have the
ability to take part fully or to varying degrees.
The scope of pupil
services in the district is broad based and includes: student registration,
individualized special education programs for students with disabilities
including all related services (occupational therapy, physical therapy and
psychological services), gifted identification and service delivery, the
administration of Ohio Proficiency Tests and other achievement testing, speech
pathology and audiology services, student health and nursing services and
student guidance counseling. The role and function of the Director of Pupil
Services is to oversee the operation of all special instruction for
students. The director works to improve
the coordination among regular education and special education service
providers at the school level.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The Impact on Students with Special Needs
President Bush signed House Resolution 1 to re-authorize the
Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This act has also been called
Leave No Child Behind. This piece of legislation will have a
profound impact on our nation and, specifically, will effect students with
special needs. Parents are encouraged to learn all they can about this
topic. The district is working to have a presentation for parents.
