The following are the minutes from the October 18, 2004 meeting at the Board of Education building:

 

Call To Order

The October 18, 2004 meeting was called to order by Tom Smanik at 7:36 p.m.

 

Approval of Agenda

The agenda were approved with no additions or corrections by Tom Smanik.

 The motion was granted by Kevin Kanareff and seconded by Carrie Tate.

 

Approval of Minutes

The September minutes were approved with the addition of Rena Parma’s attendance to absent with notice correction by Tom Smanik.

The motion was granted by Kevin Kanareff and seconded by Leslie Brusk.

 

Superintendent's Report by Dr. Jim Costanza:

 

  • No report.  Jim was attending the Leadership Challenge meeting.

 

 

Board of Education Report by Tom LeChaix:

 

Performing Arts Center Update -

  • Anticipated opening is February 1, the auditorium will be at substantial completion
  • Outside panels were bubbling and were determined to be defective by the manufacturer.  They are currently trying to design a way to place the new panels over the defective panels.  There is no additional cost to the district.

 

Other Westlake District News -

  • Teacher contracts will expire in December and they are still negotiating.
  • The Board is interviewing public relations firms to help with the levy.

Other Westlake District News continued-

  • There was a bomb threat at the high school the week of October 11th.  There was a 10 minute evacuation.  The necessity of an evacuation is determined by the Westlake Police Department.  At the time they were pretty sure a student was responsible.  A student was arrested, the Police Department will prosecute, and the district is taking appropriate disciplinary action.

 

October Board Meeting -

  • The Board will recognize the past and current CAC members at the October 21st meeting at 7:00p.m.

 

 

Committee Reports:
  

Communication

  • No report.

 

PAC V - Gala

  • They have a meeting, Tuesday, October 26 at Porter Library at 7 p.m.

 

PAC V – Ribbon Cutting

  • They are exploring a Sunday ribbon-cutting, due to be February 1 opening of the building
  • The teachers are having a difficult time with the work involved with ribbon-cutting

 

Levy Committee

  • No report.

 

Unfinished Business

 

  • The Board approved the topics of the healthy food and District safety to the 2004-05 charges.
  • See attached for the charge descriptions and committee members.


New Business

 

CAC Membership

  • Corinne Lange is stepping down as a CAC member.  Tom Smanik is currently in the process of determining which alternate will complete her term.

2004-05

Project:  Communications

Description:  Review of CAC communications program including but not limited to review of CAC website (adding and/or refreshing content), process for proactively reaching out into the community for feedback, coordination with School District communications, etc.  Investigate need to review and communicate past CAC projects (e.g., Drug and Alcohol Study) as well as current CAC projects to school families and Westlake community.

Project:  District Safety

Description:  Review/audit Westlake School District’s safety plan, and identify any safety issues that should be further considered.  Review the coordination and communications of safety issues within the city and schools. (Contact: Gary Slocum, Business Manager; Chief Wallings, WLPD)

Project:  Healthy Food Options

Description:  Review Westlake School District’s health program components as they relate to nutrition education.  Also, review the role of the schools and home, as they relate to providing proper nutrition to children, including a review of our current lunch program offerings, and our other on-site food choices such as vending machines. (Contact: Dorothy Beyer, School Nurse; Gary Slocum, Business Manager).

Project:  Levy Campaign

Description:  Review and recommend legal structure and organizational best practices (specifically for communications and fundraising) of standard, on-going levy campaign program for the purpose of increasing community support and voter approval of Westlake school levies.

Project:  PAC

Description:  Implementation of plan to host both the Open House/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (early February) and Gala Event (March 6 featuring the Cleveland Pops Orchestra).  Numerous non-CAC members are active as volunteers working with both event teams.  CAC provides overview and guidance.
