CAC Minutes – November 15, 2004

The following are the minutes from the November 15, 2004 meeting at the Board of Education building:

Call To Order

The November 15, 2004 meeting was called to order by Sherman Bishop at 7:36 p.m.

Approval of Agenda

The agenda were approved with no additions or corrections by Sherman Bishop.

 The motion was granted by Kevin Kanareff and seconded by Jean Seasholtz.

Approval of Minutes

The October minutes were approved with no additions or corrections by Sherman Bishop.

The motion was granted by Kevin Kanareff and seconded by Lee Field-Starks.

Superintendent's Report by Dr. Jim Costanza:

Performing Arts Center Update -

• Still on target for February 2^nd turnover

• Replacement / coverage of previously reported defective panels is going well. There is no additional cost to the district for the additional work required.

New K – 6 Report Card was rolled out in the recent reporting period and seems to have been well received.

3^rd Grade Reading Results - This fall 3^rd graders were tested against end-of-year standards with achievement of 80% versus State minimum of 75%.

Board of Education Report by Tom LeChaix:

Other Westlake District News -

• Teachers are to vote on the pending contract on Wednesday 11/17 and the Board on Thursday 11/18.
• The Board is still considering the most appropriate timing for the next levy. Revised Crocker Park estimates yield $300,000 / year less than prior estimates and the district continues faces healthcare costs higher than previously expected.

Committee Reports:

Communication

• No committee report as team meeting has not yet occurred. Based on discussions during the Novermber 15^th CAC meeting, the Communications team will, among other things, be involved with Triad, the firm re-engaged to poll the community regarding school district financial concerns.

District Safety

• Reviewing district policy. Considering potential tour of all district school facilities.

Healthy Foods

At their first meeting the committee discussed the following topics:

• Role of schools in influencing healthy eating habits / related curriculum
• How to coordinate promoting healthy choices at home and carrying this through to the school lunch program
• Researching best practices in this region, the country, public and private schools
• Positive development: Funding has been approved for the dairy vending machine at WHS

Levy Committee

• Met recently to discuss various PAC alternatives. Several open questions remain. Currently awaiting feedback from Mark Pepera, Treasurer.
• Goal is to present an informational report reflecting outlining various options to the Board by the end of the year.

PAC V - Gala

• Next meeting is November 30^th at 7:00 p.m. at the Library.
• The four individual sub-committees (Budget, Promotion, Informal Event, Gala Event) are also meeting independently.

PAC V – Ribbon Cutting

• Planned for Sunday, February 13^th, 2005
• No further update.

Unfinished Business

• 2 CAC vacant positions: One position was filled with the approval of Polly Schmauch by the CAC in its entirety at the November 15^th meeting. The remaining open position will be determined at the December meeting.

New Business

• Andy Call asked, on behalf of the Westlake Ministerial Forum, that CAC member think about and report to him any thoughts on what the community wants / needs / expects from churches in our area.
