WHS Physical Education Rules, Regulations and Grading Policies

All School rules will apply in addition to the following

Proper Dress for Class

1. A complete change of athletic clothing must be worn, including t-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts or sweatpants, socks and tennis shoes. No jeans shorts, ragged, cut-off or torn shorts, sweatpants, or shirts will be permitted. No school clothes should be worn over or under physical education clothes.

2. A dress cut will be given to a student NOT having tennis shoes to wear. Tennis shoes should be tied before class and remain tied during the class period.

3. Classes may be held outdoors in the fall and spring. Be prepared daily with a jacket, sweatshirt and/or sweatpants.

4. No jewelry should be worn during class since it can pose a safety hazard.

Lockers and Locker Rooms

1. One small locker in the physical education locker room will be assigned to each student. During class, the lock should be put on a large locker with all belongings locked inside. After class, physical education clothes must be locked in the small assigned locker.

2. The physical education locker room is the only one that may be used.

3. A combination lock must be provided (no key locks will be allowed) and the teacher will record the combination. The combination should never be given to another student.

4. No sharing of lockers will be permitted.

5. Once class begins, no student will be allowed back into the locker room without permission from the teacher.

6. Valuable belongings (jewelry, purses, wallets) must be locked in a locker during class. Leaving valuables lying around is only inviting theft. The physical education staff will not be responsible for lost of stolen articles.

Class Expectations

1. Students will be given four minutes after the tardy bell rings and five minutes at the end of class to change clothes.

2. No gum chewing is allowed in class and no food or drink is to be consumed in the gym or locker room areas.

3. All students will remain in the gym until the bell rings to end the period and they are dismissed.

4. Any injuries or emergencies must be reported to the teacher during the class period so the proper action can be taken.

5. No student may ever leave the class, gym or locker room areas without permission from the teacher.

6. No one is allowed in the equipment room without permission from the teacher.

7. Directions must be followed the first time they are given.

8. Abuse, destruction or misuse of physical education equipment will not be tolerated. Obscene language, gestures, harassment or disrespect will not be tolerated.

Participation Excuse

1. A student well enough to be in school is generally well enough to be dressed and participating in class. Any exception to this will be handled on an individual basis.

2. A note from a parent is required to excuse a student due to injury or illness. It will be accepted for a maximum of three consecutive days. To be excused longer than three days, a doctor’s note is required.

3. A student who has become ill at school will discuss the problem wit the teacher before the start of class and a decision will be made as to the best course of action for the student to take.

4. Any student with an excused absence from school or excuse from class participation will be required to make-up the points to get credit for class(es) missed.

Grading Requirements

1. The points earned for the quarter will determine a student’s grade. Points will be earned for proper dress and for class participation. There will also be written and/or skill tests and some possibilities to earn extra credit points.

2. Dress points will be determined as follows.

  • 0 days missed for dress = 100 points
  • 1 days missed for dress = 90 points
  • 2 days missed for dress = 80 points
  • 3 days missed for dress = 70 points
  • 4 days missed for dress = 60 points
  • 5 days missed for dress = *** FAILURE FOR THE QUARTER ***

3. A maximum of 5 points per class may be earned for participation at the required level during class. Points may be earned in the following ways.

A maximum of 5 points will be earned each class period if a student…

  • Participates to the best level of his/her ability.
  • Shows good sportsmanship.
  • Follows directions and class rules.
  • Treats equipment with care in the proper manner

A maximum of 4 points will be earned each class period if a student

  • Performs unsafe act(s).
  • Shows poor sportsmanship.
  • Uses profanity.
  • Puts others down.
  • Breaks game rules or expectations intentionally.
  • Argues with others.
  • Is tardy to class.

A maximum of 3 points will be earned each class period if a student exerts reduced effort during an activity.

0 points will be earned each class period if a student

  • Has an unexcused absence.
  • Is being in subordinate
  • Is fighting
  • Destroys school property
  • Is not excused and not participating.

How to earn make-up points for Medical Excuses or Excused Absences from class

1. A written summary of any sports article from a newspaper or magazine will earn 5 points. The summary should be at least 3-4 sentences in length and either include a copy of the article or the author, source and date of the publication.

2. A sports article taken off the Internet at least one page in length about any activity we have done in class will earn 5 points. A summary is required.

3. Laps may be jogged around the basketball court in the main gym after class has been dismissed to dress. Two laps will be worth one point.

Make up points must be completed by Friday of the week following that in which they were missed to get credit. If you are out sick or have a planned absence, you know what needs to be done to make up for missed points. It is the responsibility of the student to earn required points. Every student in the class can earn a good grade by participating each day and making up points for missed classes.

Extra Credit

Every student will have the opportunity to earn points by submitting web site links related to class subject areas. All links need to be submitted online via the Internet @ http://westlake.k12.oh.us/hilliard/whspe/ Students will earn one point for each accepted site. All sites submitted must fall into one of the following categories related to sports, game play or exercise. All sites are subject to acceptance by the teacher for acceptance.

  • History of Sport
  • Official Rules and Regulations of Sport
  • Skills involved in sport, game, or exercise.
  • Strategy involved in sport, game, or exercise.

Detention Rules

Teacher detentions will be given as needed to any student not following class rules and procedures. They will be served in the cafeteria on the day given or the next school day in the following manner.

1st detention 2:35 – 2:50 Sit quietly or do homework at designated table

2nd detention 2:35 – 3:00 Sit quietly or do homework at designated table

3rd detention 2:35 – 3:10 Complete written assignment

If more detentions are assigned, an office referral and a call to your parents will be made. Failure to comply with these rules will result in office detentions and / or referral.
