Stories for the bench:

1/12  We traveled out to Avon Lake and played in the first round of the Rocky River Tournament.  Unfortunately we got off to a horrible start as Avon Lake took a 13 to 2 lead.  Logan Kelly scored the only basket in the  first quarter.  We totally forgot how to attack a half court trap.  We did not get players to the corners.  Michael and Steve tried to force the ball through by dribbling it too much.  We forgot to have a second guard back to reverse the ball.  Mr. Nunnari made an interesting comment during the game about taking away the first quarter that we were playing them even which was true.  Take away the first quarter and we lose 35 to 30.  We outscored them in the second quarter after their coach took off the press 14 to 12.  In the third we made a little run to get close and she put the press back on which we did alright against.  Our lack of ball handlers and shooters hurt us as it has all season.  That will be something the team members will need to set as goals to get better at next year if they are going to try out for the freshman team.  I remember Logan getting on the floor several times for loose balls.  He even had a behind the back pass while sitting on the floor!  Michael Steinetz had an awesome pass to Sullivan for an assist.  We had 9 players score in the game which was neat.  Joseph had a running hook off the backboard.  We shot 8 to 15 from the foul line.  I mentioned after the game that their coach praised your hustle and intensity in play.  I also mentioned that we just lacked playing experience along with ball handling and shooting… You just need to play more.  Along with that was the number of you that didn’t get to play last year:  Michael Steinetz, Dan Squire, Joseph Hadib-Nissan, Rahil  Desai, Logan Kelly, Chris White, Matt Nunnari, Frank Fazio.  Then also, those that did play last year did not get much playing time which hurt your development.  Anyways, I’m proud of the effort you gave, I thought even though our record was 4 & 11 we made progress in our play.  Then next step is yours!  Will you give yourself to train, work on your shooting, dribbling, and defensive improvement?  Attend skills camps, put a team in the Rocky River league in the summer, try to make an AAU team?

1/7  Our last home game against the best Non Conference team.  Wow!

I got out some warm up tops for this one.  Play some warm up music too.

This did not help us though.  They totally dominated us. This Brecksville team could beat half the Conference schools.  Dan Squire was the only player to score two baskets for us.  The other 12 points came by way of foul shots. On the bright side we did shoot 12 of 19 from the foul line.  I had to get after the officials to get some of those foul shots too.  We ended the regular season 4 & 10.   Rahil came back from India but missed practices and pictures last Friday.  Jake Goodman sprained his foot playing at the Rec over the holiday.  I would like to play Avon, Olmsted Falls, and Midview again because I do think overall we have gotten better as a team.  Anyways on to the Rocky River tournament.  We were the six seeded team so we have to travel to the third seeded team which is Avon Lake Monday January 11th at 4:30.

12/18 Competed with Avon Lake until the third quarter.  22 to21 at half time. Then they blew us out the third quarter outscoring us 23 to 8.  I was proud of our effort throughout the game.  We played hard.  I remember Matt Nunnari diving on the floor a few times trying to make plays. We got behind 13 to 7 in the first quarter.  Sullivan, White, & Steinetz all had baskets and John Alfes split a pair of foul shots.  They hit two three balls which hurt.(20 & 25) We came back in the second quarter outscoring them 14 to 9 to close within one point as Martello hit a huge three ball. We were 4 of 10 from the foul line in the quarter. Jack had 5 other points in the quarter to tally 8.  In the third we were 6 for 6 from the foul line as Sullivan, White, & Steinetz all converted their foul shots.  Matt Nunnari hit a basket late in the quarter but we turned the ball over way too many times as Lake blew the game open from there.  Some good things we did was fouling at the end to put them at the line.  (Meaning we fouled the right way) Chris White went up and challenged a kids shot fouling him but not letting him make the basket… I also hooked Chris right after he caught the ball and put it right on the floor without looking… he got baled out on an officials foul call but I still made the point.  We changed different presses during the game.  This is the first time we tried doing this.  Pretty well I thought.  I spoke to the team afterwards about playing and competing better this time around.  I mentioned that we might work on different zones to be able to move in and out of to try and confuse the other teams once we get to the tournament.  We will begin working on this today at practice.  I felt good about us competing.  Martello ended with 11 points, Sullivan & Steinetz both had 7, White 5, Alfes 3 & Nunnari a basket.  4 & 9 and off until we host Brecksville on January 7th or 8th.

12/16 Winnable game!  Lost to O. Falls 29 to 25.  Within four points with 2:30 something on the clock. I called time out and mentioned to the team that we had to make a steal or foul right away because we only had 4 team fouls and we had to get to them to the foul line to shoot one & ones. The players on the floor let a minute something run off the clock in the next possession before we fouled them.  It was then their 5th foul. We had to foul twice more to get them to the line.  Oh yes, we still struggle with fouling without ripping an arm or pushing in the back.  The kid who eventually went to the line missed the foul shot but we could not get any closer.  Sad, a winnable game.  We started the game by giving them two easy layups.  Down 4 to 0 within the first 30 seconds. We came back though with Chris Whites two baskets, Martello’s two foul shots, and baskets by Squire & Alfes.  We outscored O. Falls 10 to 2 to take a 10 to 6 first quarter lead.  We did not score the next quarter and they put 8 more points on the board to lead at half time 14 to 10.  Our zone caused them some problems and we boarded well.  Matt Nunnari hit a three ball in the fourth quarter to bring us to within four when we forgot about fouling to stop the clock.  Oh, another item for the book was the beginning of the second quarter I told the five that were going to be on the floor that we would run our sideline stack and look for Squire first out, then give and go with Sullivan and Martello.  Well guess what?  We don’t even line up in our stack!  What is that?  Oh well, 4 & 8 and heading to Avon Lake on Thursday.

12/14 What a great effort by our guys!  34 to 23 victory over River at River.  A team that beat us by 20 some at our place early on.  We shared the ball.  Ran the break and converted.  Jack Sullivan made some terrific passes to open players to get easy points.  We actually made cuts to the basket.  Evan took the ball to the basket on three drives even though he didn’t get the basket at least he is now getting there.  Dan Squire and Matt Nunnari had wonderful game besides scoring 6 and 7 points respectfully they shadowed the River #13 the whole game and got him totally frustrated that he did not play the fourth quarter. We worked on running 4 corners to run time off the clock and did not do a good enough job with it turning the ball over on over and back violations.  We need to drive on this when it happens… still learning.  I thought John Alfes had another big game for us…doing a lot of things that others have not done.  Jack Sullivan scored for us this time… nice to see.  We battled on the boards well.  The officials let us play and did not call many fouls.  The passing was nice to see finally.  We are starting to get our heads up and looking over the floor.  Mike Steinetz played well.  Once getting out on a break he felt he was getting pressure and curled the ball out and set up our offense.  This was a first for him… neat to watch.  Mike also hit a three ball, as did Matt.  Maybe we are starting to come together and play as a team.  Last time I thought this we stunk, so hopefully and with much faith we’ll press on tonight against my home community Olmsted Falls.

4 & 7 and hosting Falls.  Way to got guys!!!

12/11 Back to back win is great.  23 to 19 win at Lake Ridge.  We played pretty flat again.  John Alfes was awesome the first quarter scoring 5 of the teams 9 points.  John is really coming on for us and will be getting more playing time.  Steve Maxey hit a three ball in the second as we extended our lead to 8 points 16 to 8.  Defensively I thought we played fairly well, but it is on offense that we struggle.  We settle for too many jump shots.  Lake Ridge played a nice 2 / 3 zone which limited us to one and out.  In the third quarter we only had Jack Martello’s basket, as Lake Ridge closed to 18 to 13.  I could sense that this was a game we could easily lose.  Jack Sullivan finished off a nice break from Jack Martello doing a smooth 360 to lay in his only basket.  I’ve told the boys that there a certain guys that need to score for us and they consistently don’t so that is frustrating. I thought Matt Nunnari played nice defense on their 7th grade stud in the third quarter.  Our press didn’t really hurt them like in the first game.  Jack Martello led us with 7 points, although I thought he could have added at least three more baskets during the game.  3 & 7 and traveling to Rocky River on Monday.  Remember this game will be played first…. At least that is what I’ve been told.  Can we rally against these teams that beat us the first time?  We’ll see.

12/8 Yippie! We got a W!  I got a headache, but it was good to get a win, especially the way they outplayed us the first time at our place.  It was a battle again as we tried to find a way to break their press.  We finally began to throw over it and make some passes.  I liked the way we front pressed them back when we were able to get into the press.  Officials called way too many fouls and they wised up the second half.  Anyways Midview made 4 baskets and we made 4 baskets the first half.  The difference was they had made 8 of 16 from the foul line.  Therefore we were down 18 to 12.  Martello had 6 points as we kept missing shots.  We outscored them 10 to 6 to close within 2 the third quarter as we made 4 of 6 foul shots.  In the fourth it was back & forth.  We tied the game 30 and I called time out.  I mentioned that if we had the lead we would go to 4 corners, but we needed a stop.  Anyways I remember calling a time out just as Midview was making a steal and the official granted me the time out when they could have made the break away layup to go ahead.  Anyways Stevie was fouled and he made the first foul shot but came up short on the second.  Fortunately Midview stepped over and Steve made the substitution foul shot.  Now up two, Midview drives down the lane and scores again.  They did it just the time before.  No one stepped up to stop the ball.  Anyways Martello hits a three ball to put us up three.  Jack scored 15 on the game.  ( I spoke to the team about shooter and scorers… fortunately Jack was our scorer this game ) The next time down Martello gets a rebound and takes off dribbling up court only to lose the ball… Sullivan makes a steal only to throw it away, when all he had to do is hold the ball.  Wow!!! Nothing comes easy for this group.  On the bus ride home I asked Stevie what there record was last year and he said he though they had 5 wins.  Not sure were going to get that but I think we are getting there.  Last years group had Paul Angala, Jared Bell, and a couple of taller kids, so our group is a work in progress.

2 & 7 and heading to Lake Ridge Thursday.

12/4 Wow!  Just when I think we are getting around the corner we get blindsided again.  We lost to a 1 & 6 River team sad to say.  We played flat, uninspired ball.  The first group was outscored 10 to 1.  I came away very disappointed in our effort and play.  The only thing I know to do is keep working and persevere as my Mom & Dad have taught me.  That is what we will do tonight at practice.  The team will watch some of the DVD that Mr. Steinetz took for us at Brecksville and then do some drills and then scrimmage the 7th grade boys.  We play at Midview on Monday and it is a 4:30 start. 1 & 7.

12/2 We played without Logan Kelly, ill, and John Alfes, band.  I thought we played well early with Brecksville not pressing us.  13 to 8.  Mike Steinetz & Stevie both hit threes which helped.  We are still very mechanical in our offensive play.  Lots of standing around.  Brecksville pressed us in the second quarter which hurt us some. We worked on our half court defense and getting back on defense. Overall I don’t think we did badly… our boys don’t seem to play with a sense of urgency as they say.  We lack basketball understandings… but we will continue to work at these things. This next couple of weeks we have a chance to win some games with River, Midview, Lake Ridge, and River again to play before we take on O. Falls & A. Lake before the Christmas break.  Jack Sullivan scored 8 and Mike Steinetz added 6.  Steve Maxey and Jack Martello hit two baskets for 4 points.  Chris White added a three ball.  It would be nice to put it all together soon….  1 & 6 and hosting R. River Thursday.

11/23  Sorry about this.  I was not told that the game was moved back to Monday.  Anyways, the kids played well.  I could see improvement in several areas.  The biggest was some good defense with some of the boys really helping when someone got beat!  That has been a point of emphasis during practices.  We returned to the original motion I’m calling Duke, which is pass and pick away with a roll back.  The few times we did run it we seemed to get better cutting and moving.  I really liked Jack Sullivan’s assists yesterday.  Jack Martello’s play in the first half keep us going with 6 points.  Joseph played some good help defense and came up with a steal or two.  Jake Goodman played with passion as he usually does.  Dan Squire played well coming off his head injury scoring 5.  Rahil scored all 8 of his points in the fourth quarter!  Wow!!! Logan Kelly and Mike Steinetz really were the leaders with help defense yesterday… that was neat to see.  I split the boys up differently yesterday where 5 boys rotated every three minutes.  That way everyone got to play some minutes.  Last Friday I cut out many of the drills and we scrimmaged the 7th graders for most of the time, stopping to instruct situational type of things.  We have done many drills but I was not seeing the carry over in the games.  I thought this might help up more right now.  We’ll continue this when we come back from Thanksgiving break.  We get to play Brecksville who like Avon Lake is very very good. I told the boys to work on their pick & roll, back door, and defensive help work at the Rec Center during the lay off.  1 & 5

11/20 Disappointing.  We did not compete with A. Lake.  To their credit they are probably the second best team we will play but still we played like deer in the head lights.  Lots of work still to do.  Hope the kids watch some hoops on tv. Martello getting hurt right away took away our overall best player.  Dan Squire hitting his head was painful too. Not much went right for us. Joesph and Jack Sullivan led the team with 6 points on three baskets.  Jake Goodman scored.  John Alfes tried to take a charge.  We got beat on the backside of our press.  We’ll have to rethink how we are going to play the really good teams. 0 & 5

11/18 Lost 36 to 23.  Wow, we played O. Falls well the first half.  Lead by 4, 18 to 14, on Mike Ortiz three pointer at the buzzer!  Falls tied us up 22 all at the end of the third quarter.  Then we fell apart and could not make a basket.  We also missed several front end of one on one opportunity.

Falls outscored us 14 to 1 in the fourth!  We were 4 of 16 from the foul line.  Falls was worse; they were 3 of 17… We did battle early. We did run some pick and roll plays which were encouraging.  We struggled getting the ball in on their press.  Our point guards need to do a better job getting this done. Rahil learned you can not put two hands in the back of a player… he was called for his second intentional foul.  Some of our guys are not making an impact and changes will continue until we find some that step up.  I thought Danny played his best game.  Once he took the ball coast to coast and finished with a lay up.  Mike Ortiz showed some better play. We still are real raw as far as understanding the game.  We will get some work done tonight and get ready for A. Lake tomorrow.  0 & 4

11/13 Lost 36 to 31. We came out and pressed from the beginning.  They won the tip. We tried a 2 / 3 zone and it seemed to work the first quarter.

Score was 5 to 5 at this point.  In the second they outscored us 14 to 6 as we did not box out and make plays.  Down 8.  Chris took a shot to the nose and we had to deal with blood.  We made mistakes again against their press which hurt us.  They scored 5 to our 4 in the third quarter as we went back to man to man with our press.  We outscored them 16 to 13 to cut into their 10 point lead but it was not enough. Jack Martello had 6 quick points after being held scoreless the whole game off the press that sparked us.  We played hard throughout the game.  I wish we could shoot better.  Jack Sullivan had 7 second half points that helped us after only splitting a pair of baskets the first half.  Evan Milovich had 4 first half points to help keep us close.  We’ll keep working to get better.  I think we are close… the question remains how much better will we get by the end of the season?  I hope a lot!!!  0 & 3

11/11 Lost 45 to 40.  Disappointing.  We got behind early 12 to 6 and could never recover.  They shot the ball well and we did not.  Midview was quicker and more aggressive.  We were down 10 at half time and try to cut into the lead but at the end of the third we were still down 10 points.  I found Chris White who nailed 3 three balls and a basket to help us make a run.  We had to do an on the job learning experience trying to extend the game by using our time outs and fouls.  Unfortunately 4 guys passed on fouling as they were instructed before Rahil finally did to the tune of an intentional which I felt bad for him.  At least he attempted to do what I instructed. We talked about that at practice last night.  In speaking with team members I just have to realize that most of our guys have not played together and many are still learning what it takes to play the game.  Jack Martello continues to led us with his strong play.  Logan Kelly came through with his first two baskets which was nice to see.  Matt Nunnari hit a big three ball just before half time to keep it a 10 point lead.  Our press had some impact and we outscored them 16 to 13 in the fourth quarter.  We still are late with our passes, late playing defense, and certain players whom been told that we need them to look to score; not looking to score.  We will keep working on it.  We have Avon coming in tomorrow who beat us last week.  Here is something interesting Chris White has not seen much playing time got some because Mike Steinetz was ill last Friday and did not practice.  Chris was about 12th of 15 on my BCS ranking as of last game.  He now will be starting at the point.  So, my point is my rankings is fluid and guys who show in practice or what minutes they get in games that they are making improvement will get time.  0 & 2

11/6 Lost 29 to 25.  Played well early.  Up 7 to 0 after the first quarter.

14 to 7 at half time.  Sullivan & Joseph led our scoring. We challenged well on the boards.  Ran motion a little.  Logan had a back door cut.

I remember someone trying to take a charge… Then the third quarter we were bad.  Avon’s press really hurt us as we were outscored 17 to 5.  Wow!!!  We have lots of work to do.  We’ll work on breaking the press and pressing now, plus we’ll keep working on our motion offense.  We really need our wing players to set up and contribute. Martello & Sullivan hit threes during the game.  In fact Sullivan’s three brought us to within three points I believe.  We had to foul them and they split the pair for a 4 point win.  This was a team that blew us out as seventh graders so I came away feeling like we have made some improvements.  Now we’ll see how much better we are tonight.  0 & 1

11/5 Game Day 2009! We are pretty well prepared I think.  Now we’ll see what we are made of against some comparable competition.  Hopefully the boys will get over the case of the nerves quickly.  Five players were told that at this point they will not play just because we have so many.  I did say if the game was a blow out one way or other then they might get some minutes.  With only 6 minute quarters and 16 players…

Anyways, I did tell them that between games I would reevaluate this to be fair.

11/4  We are learning a new motion offense.  The Conference team used it against us.  It looked more player friendly in my mind.  We are still working at it.  The players received their uniforms last night at the end of practice.  Still working on combinations to play together for three minutes at a time.  I have told the boys that I will be playing 10 of the 16 boys during the game.  It is possible I might get another one or two in but players 13 through 16 probably will not play tomorrow.  Each game I will reevalutate.

10/28/09  On Saturday we held an intrasquad scrimmage Green & White game.  I came away very pleased with the effort of the team.  Several players really stood out to me.

Mike Steintz, Jack Martello, Mike Ortiz, & Dan Squire all played very well.  Logan Kelly did several nice things. Rahil Deasi played impressive at times.  This is going to be interesting to see how quickly we jell as a team.  Steve Maxey really stepped up too.  When you look at our team, we are made up of three boys who played on the Conference team last year, Evan Milovich, Jack Martello, & Jake Goodman.  I’m not sure how much they played but I’m excited that I get to work with them this year.  6 boys who played on the Non Conference team, John Alfes, Jake Bechtal, Mike Ortiz,  Jack Sullivan, Steve Maxey, and Matt Nunnari.  2 boys that moved in Chris White & Frank Fazio.  Finally 5 boys who were cut from try outs last year, Logan Kelly, Dan Squire, Mike Steintz, Josef Hadib-Nissan, Rahil Desai.  We have been learning a lot.  The team is require to keep a journal to record plays, sets, drawings, and reflections on how they are doing…. Things well & things to work on. I told them we wouldn’t have practiced Saturday if I did not think they have a chance of developing into a pretty competitive team… we’ll see.  It all starts Novemeber 5th at Avon!  We will scrimmage the Conference team on Friday to play some good competition….  Feel free to come and check us out.

10/22  We have been working hard at lots of drill stuff… first learning how to do the various drills and secondly my expectations for the drill.  Overall, I’ve been please with the effort, and the attention to detail by most.  Tonight players got a look at where I have rated them according to my BCS standards.  This way they have an idea where they stand.  We have installed two out of bounds plays.  We have been working on a offensive set.  We have worked to defensive technique like taking a charge, help D, help the helper D, stance & shuffle.  We got a little work against the press and pressing.  Anyways, things are going pretty well.  I tried calling Midview for a scrimmage, but as yet have not heard anything.  Stay tune…  I have asked players to begin journaling their journey with me.  I will have hand outs throughout the season.

10/ 19 We got through three days of try outs last week and they were one of the most difficult that I’ve had to make.  It reminded me of the year I coached the Freshman and I kept 17 players.  This year I decided to keep 16.  After meeting with the players I told them I could play 10 for about half the games but the other 6 might not get playing time.  I told them I would rate them after games, scrimmages, several practices and they could move up or down depending on their play.  I also mentioned that after some time if they were not going to get playing time and they wanted to quit that I would respect that as well.  This years team thus far includes:

John Alfes

Frank Fazio

Rahil Desai

Jacob Goodman

Josef Hadib-Nissan

Logan Kelly

Steve Maxey

Evan Miliovich

Jack Martello

Matt Nunnari

Mike Ortiz

Dan Squire

Mike Steinetz
