The top ten point getters over the past
six years are as followed: These girls earn points by placing first, second,
third, fourth or in big
meets even fifth & sixth. They also
earn points for placing on relay teams or relay meets. For all these girls they are two-year totals. This is still amazing to me. Congratulations girls!

I would like to provide some helpful
information to parents if this is your first daughter to participate in Track
& Field for me at Burneson. Even if your daughter participated last year
these will be helpful reminders.
1. I
usually have sign ups for track & field the first week in March. Practices usually begin around the middle of
March. Usually we have 150 girls sign
up. Many are seventh graders wanting to
be involved for the first time to try the experience.
2. Track
& Field is a wonderful sport where girls that are flat out fast can run the
sprints, 100, 200 dashes or 4 bye 100 or the 4 bye 200
relays. They might be distance runners
where they are fast over a longer distance, 400, 800, or the 1600-meter runs
and the 4 bye 400 relay. Girls that are
very strong can find success in the throwing events, shot put &
discus. Then there are the jumpers, long
jump & high jump events. Today girls
that are fast, strong, and are a little nutty can compete in the pole
vault.
3. I
coach the pole-vaulters & hurdlers.
Pole vault practice usually goes to 5:30 because I also work with the
hurdlers and vaulting takes more time. Sometimes the high school kids are still
working.
4. Practices
are after school from 3:45 to 5:00 that way if girls are involved in soccer or
other activities they generally have time to get to there practices or
games. We might extend to have special
practice from 5:00 to 5:30 for relay exchange work or some extra work.
5. No
one gets cut, unless they are a problem on the team.
6. Our
girls walk up to the high school after school after a brief meeting with
me. Rides can pick them up at the high
school. If
the weather turns bad with regards to rain & cold we might have decided to
stay at Burneson and practiced there so if your
daughter is not at the high school you should swing by Burneson.
7. I
am always looking for helpers. Last year
we had a mom that was willing to come and work with our high jumpers since we
don’t have enough coaches to cover all the events. Mrs. Fouts, our French teacher, who used to
compete, helps out whenever she is able. Mr. Braxton helped with our long
jumpers. So if you have some experience
or are willing to do some research and then help as volunteer coach please
contact me ASAP.
8. We
always need help running our home meets.
We need parent willing to time, measure distances, record throws or
jumps. So if you are willing to help us
on just the days of our home meets please
contact me
ASAP.
9. I
would like phone calls or email contacts letting me know whenever
Your
daughter is not going to be at practice or meets. I try to account for some 150 girls early
on. We usually end up around 120 or so.
a.
At
the end of the season we usually have a pop & pizza recognition. Gathering
after school one
day. We collect the girl’s
uniforms and then recognize their efforts.
I usually give them a memory booklet covering the season. We present the golden & silver shoes
winners. Golden shoe goes to the top 8th
grader and Silver to the top 7th grader.
b.
HOODIES!!! Once I have sign ups, I usually have a brief
meeting with all the girls that are interested in coming out. I will give them a hoodie order form that
they can check with you about. Then cost
has been fairly reasonable over the years.
We try to get this done early so we can get them sooner. (Especially if the spring brings us bad
weather)
c. Finally, please feel free to email or call me
whenever you have a question or concern.
This is my business. This is what
I enjoy doing and after this year I only have three more left.
