Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can cause mild to severe illness in people of all ages. Pneumonia can be caused by viruses and bacteria. These infections can usually be treated with antibiotics, antiviral drugs (such as Tamiflu), or specific drug therapies.

Common signs of pneumonia include cough, fever, rapid breathing, difficulty breathing and chest pain. You are more likely to become ill with pneumonia if you smoke or have underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. You can help prevent pneumonia and other respiratory infections by following good hygiene practices, such as washing your hands regularly and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

Please consider taking your child to the doctor if they exhibit a persistent cough, prolonged or recurring fever, general malaise or the above signs and symptoms of possible pneumonia. Also, remind family members to wash hands frequently, cough and sneeze into their elbow, and promptly dispose of used tissues.

Stop the Spread of Germs

Stop the spread of germs that can make you and others sick!

Influenza (flu) and other serious respiratory illnesses, like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), are spread by cough, sneezing, or unclean hands.

To help stop the spread of germs:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
